Late Thursday night we decided to check to see if we could find a reasonably placed hotel in the mountains for a night or two. We did manage to book a suite in Carbondale, CO which is in between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. Having a suite is key so that we can put Henry to bed or to nap in the bedroom and we can be in the main room. We also found a place that would let us bring Sundance.

It was a lot of fun! We packed in a hurry and hit the road in the middle of the afternoon after Nate got off work.

We had a lovely drive through the mountains with a short stop to visit our friends Pat and Krissy. Saturday was a perfect day in the mountains - clear and mid 70s. We woke up early (well, Henry woke up early and Nate entertained him until I could drag myself out of bed at 6:45). We went for a great hike with a fabulous view of Mount Sopris, had a late lunch at a Mexican restaurant in Carbondale, and spent some time in the world-famous springs of Glenwood Springs. We also managed to squeeze a nap in for Henry. Henry seemed to like the hike in the hiking carrier we have for him, which made it much easier for Nate and I to enjoy the scenery.

The springs were amazing - HUGE and lot of fun. I'd definitely recommend a trip there and I'm sure we'll go again at some point.

Sunday the weather was not as good but we still had a nice day. We drove to Aspen and stopped along the continental divide and a few other spots for some great views. We stopped in Leadville for lunch and then back home.

It was great and I'm glad we pulled it off at the last minute!

I think we got some great pictures and will attempt to post those at some point.

Just for Janet

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pFdt2LRktYg/Sps9UuygSaI/AAAAAAAAIbM/yyraKOilibo/s400/Thumbs+up.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375958006563359138" />
Okay, so as it turns out Janet read the blog! She's probably the only one, let's see if she's still checking it! Anyone else?

We're finishing up a quiet weekend that involved a decent amount of work related activities for both Nate and I. I did a bit of work from home and Nate spent Saturday day and evening at a conference.

Henry and I managed a trip to the dog park to take Sundance swimming on Saturday and we bought Henry a big boy car seat! He's not quite one yet, but was really too big for his other one. So far so good with the new seat! We'll need another one soon for another car but are giving this one a try to make sure we like it.

On another note, here is a picture of Henry from a month or so ago. I've been told of winter days like this, but definitely didn't believe it during last year's winter. It was in the 50s both yesterday and today and with sunny skies it did feel like Spring!

A few highlights from the weekend:
* We went skiing at Arapahoe Basis on Saturday (my first time there) where I continued to hone my skiing skills and Nate continued to be patient. (Nate: She's really good and handled the blues in the new back bowl with deft expertise.)
* We took a cooking class on Saturday night where we helped concoct a shrimp appetizer, chicken and cous cous main course, and banana and chocolate crepes for dessert.
* We went jogging Sunday morning around a lake near our house and were able to witness the police department trying to pull an SUV out of the lake. Apparantly someone decided to go for a little drive on the lake and drove right into an ice-less section. WHOOPS! By the way, this is not a lake anyone drives on to go ice fishing, so I'm not sure what the thought process was. Anyhow, the car was getting mangled as the tow trucks were pulling it out through the ice and it was not an easy task.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed the warm weather continues!

Happy Birthday Kristen!!

January 12th is Laura's sister Kristen's birthday! We anticipated skiing Saturday and Sunday with them before heading back home on New Year's Eve while our friends skied at Vail. However, Mother Nature had other plans. The interstate was closed Sunday night and most of Monday!! Luckily, Mike's nice family took us in for another evening and served us a great New Year's Eve dinner.
We certainly enjoyed our weekend with them. The skiing was bitterly cold, windy, snowy and cloudy. However, even a sub-optimal day of skiing is better than just about anything else!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pFdt2LRktYg/R3xvKEqQJMI/AAAAAAAADOo/YmET8H2WLnw/s400/P1010369.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151114292645340354" />

Merry Christmas!

"Hello Friends!"

This was the greeting of little Ethan when we arrived in Green Bay, one of our two nephews (along with his brother Thomas) that live in Green Bay. Laura and I flew into Rochester (MN not NY) last Wed. night in time for the rockin' graduation of Laura's sister Janet on Thursday (followed by a delicious dinner paid for by Janet as is tradition). Janet graduated from nursing school on Thursday and will soon be the sugar-mamma for her husband Brandon (who still has a year and a half more of med school). On Friday, Janet, Brandon, Laura and I tried to recreate the magic of our journey from Denver to Rochester last Christmas by piling into their car and heading to Green Bay. We had a nice drive over there to visit Laura and Janet's brother Matt, his wife heidi and their two boys. We had a great time there and got to visit the illustrious home of the Green Bay Packers, Lambeau Field. Heidi was an excellent cook and Ethan and Thomas were very entertaining. Matt created a wonderful sign with our last name on it to hang in our home.

On Sunday, we left at 8 AM on what should be a relatively quick 5 hour drive back to Rochester. however, Mother Nature had other plans (ominous music here)... We ended up spending over EIGHT hours in the car together coming back. Between the slick roads, white-out conditions, pee breaks and Nate's consistent missing of exits ("they just looked like more snow patches"), it was pretty hard going. however, we made it back in time and in time for Brandon to get to his Dad's retirement party.
Kristen and Aaron (Kristen is another of Laura's plethora of sisters) drove over from Madison on Sunday night as well. We all stayed up playing MadGabs and other card games.

Monday was Christmas Eve. Nate did Pilates with Kristen and Aaron while Laura ran on the treadmill. Then, Nate, Laura, Kristen, Aaron and janet went to see a matinee of "I AM Legend" with Will Smith. I had been very, very excited for this movie and, I think somewhat unfortunately, swayed the group to go. The movie was much darker and scarier than I had anticipated. Not the kind of family feel good movie that one might choose for Christmas Eve! Oh well, unlike in the movie, we all survived.

The Christmas Eve church service was filled with hymn singing which I really like. It was also fun to be back at the same church where we had been married and where Janet and Brandon also got married in October.

after church, we went back and had fondue! Two pots of cheese fondue and two pots of meat fondue worked together to feed a really big group. The meat fondue was really a broth which is healthier than the peanut oil that we have used before. We will have to try that at home.

Then, the present opening began! Laura and I think that both Aaron and Carrie like the make-and-bake presents that we made for them - the green chocolate pretzel treats, the home-baked dog treats, the wine bottle/beer bottle candles, the jars of premixed hot cocoa and cookies. We got some great presents. An alarm clock / ipod player, a slide show with a new picture LCD displayer to show it on, hand-made glass etched candle holders, and a variety of fun stocking stuffers (which we might break into and eat shortly).

Christmas Day has also been filled with game playing and over-eating. Laura's mom Linda cooked a turkey for dinner with all of the fixings. Nate lost at spite-and-malice.

Now, right now, we have been dropped at the Rochester airport and are delayed going back to Denver (via Minneapolis). So, cross your fingers that we can get back to Denver tonight!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pFdt2LRktYg/R2WgSUqQJLI/AAAAAAAADOc/A6jLL9FZIa8/s400/image0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144694385984677042" />

Christmas Letter 2007 - An incredible year of Firsts!!
• Our First year living in the same city!
• Our First year living in the same house!
• Our First year as a married couple!
• Our First duathalon together and Laura’s first Triathalon
• Laura’s First year working as a marketing manager.
• Nate’s First (and probably last) book
• Our First Blog (thepricelessblog.blogspot.com) – at the insistence of Janet!
Starting with the winter blizzards and Laura’s new job in January, the year was full of new adventures for us. Laura had just moved to Colorado, leaving her friends and family behind to live happily ever after in moderate-climate Colorado. However, just like the gold rush posters from the 1800’s that overpromised, weekly blizzards (for seven weeks in row! ) made Laura’s commute a nightmare and led to lots of comparisons of weather with Minnesota (which was actually nicer!). Luckily, as we moved towards spring, Laura learned to ski on beginning ski runs and then intermediate runs and had a more positive experience with the snow. Nate was happy to ski with such a cute ski bunny.
The spring was filled with wonderful celebrations. Laura had a great wedding shower in March in Minnesota! She then had a great wedding shower in Denver thrown by her boss. Nate had a bunch of guys play paintball for his bachelor party. Also, in the spring, Nate finally decided he was done with the novel he’s been working on forever and put it online so it could be printed out by friends and family. So far, 20 copies have been ordered (mostly by Laura and Nate’s Mom Karyl). Nate will probably not be able to retire on its success…this year.
The big day happened on May 27th in Rochester when we were hitched! Thanks to all of you that were able to make it and everyone who participated. It was a really fabulous and fun party. In July, we flew to Hawaii for our honeymoon – specifically, the island of Kauai. Nine days of island fun – swimming, touring, snorkeling, sleeping, relaxing and enjoying the green vistas and humidity. One of the real highlights was our surfing lesson which Laura did very well – except for the black eye!
The next big excitement was Laura’s sister Janet’s wedding to Brandon Verdoorn in Rochester in October. It was also a great fun party and another good opportunity to see everyone. Laura was the matron of honor while Nate was the honorary goofy dancing guy.
And so we end the year better than we started (married and no big blizzards so far). We enjoyed Thanksgiving with Nate’s parents and sister and are headed to MN and WI for Christmas. Laura is doing great at her new job with Cochlear and has almost reached her one year anniversary. Nate loves his job at the National Renewable Lab so much that he turned down another job offer (and a raise) in Denver last week.
So, to add to the firsts, this is our first family Christmas letter. We hope that it’s been good for you and we promise to get even wittier and funnier in the years ahead! We hope this letter finds you all to be happy and enjoying the holidays. Along with Sundance, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s!

Happy Birthday Janet!!!

We would like to wish a very, very happy birthday to Janet, Laura's sister!!! There were blizzard conditions in the mountains yesterday, so we decided to head up early this morning for a few hours of skiing.

I was anxious to get out on the slopes to see if I maintained some of the skills I had learned last year, and of course Nate is always up for skiing! Plus, we both have new gear - new boots for Nate, new skis, poles, boots, and bindings for me. I'm excited to have my own skis. No more stopping to rent on the way to the slopes and dropping them off on the way back. One of the great things about living in Colorado is the pre-season ski sale called sniagrab (bargains spelled backwards) where you can get all geared up for about $300.

Anyhow, we got out of bed this morning at 6:30 and hit the road after throwing all our gear into the car and walking Sundance. Today we went to Keystone, which is where we spent most of our skiing time last year while I was learning. It was a beautiful day in the mountains. A little windy at the top, but clear and sunny. The views from the top of the mountain are worth the trip alone without the skiing.

The good news is that I was pretty much able to pick up where I left off today, so we skiied greens and blues. We did end up on one blue run where the tops of trees were poking through the snow and there was a lot of fresh powder. I've never skiied over tree tops that I can see before so this was interesting!

In other news, the Cochlear holiday party was last night. Nate and I put on our best duds and spent a few hours listening to a great band and enjoying wonderful food. We were hoping to win one of the prized they drew for, but no such luck. Next year we hope for the free plane tickets.

Anyone interested in visiting for a ski trip this year? So far we're looking forward to Aaron's visit and skiing with Jessica and Mike around New Years!

Turkey Day and the Annual Christmas Picture Outing

For Thanksgiving, Nate's sister came from CA and Nate's parents came from AZ. We enjoyed four days together here in Denver. Highlights included actual Thanskgiving dinner with our friends Pat and Krissy and 18 people, putting up the Christmas tree and we celebrated Christmas. The highlight is ALWAYS Sundance opening presents:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pFdt2LRktYg/R0o8H0xF2FI/AAAAAAAADN8/x9ieTToVT9I/s320/P1010245.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136984430090770514" />

Today (Sunday) we went up to the mountains for a few hours to help Pat and Krissy put together their Christmas picture which is supposed to be their dog Heidi pulling their baby Halina on a sled. I'm very interested to see how this idea works out. It's an extra challenge for all of us!

Following family tradition we drew names. Nate has Carrie and I have Aaron. Now, we're both resourceful people, but making or baking a Christmas gift has thrown us for a loop! I have to give props to Kristen, because every gift idea we can think of she has made in the last several years!

We're determined to plan ahead on this one - no macaroni necklaces made the night before for Carrie or Aaron! So...this past weekend we headed to the store we swore we wouldn't go into for years after our wedding...Michael's. Yup, that's right Michael's aka wedding and craft world galore.

I obviously can't divulge too much information in this posting, but Carrie & Aaron, get excited, very excited! But to everyone else reading this, we struggle! Any ideas we can make or bake, and take on plane???

We promise a blog shout out to anyone who submits an idea! This is also a test to see if people actually read this :)

Halloween 2007

Laura and I spent our first Halloween together as a couple of marrieds. Seeing as how Halloween was on Wednesday, we stayed in and handed out candy to the kiddies. We kept our fingers crossed that not very many kids would come and we could keep the candy (or at least I was). However, we got quite a few kids. I think that it probably had something to do with the awesome jack-o-lanterns that we carved. See the pictures below of our great jack-o-lanterns.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pFdt2LRktYg/Ry6b7i90mPI/AAAAAAAADNs/kjGwopKpaHs/s320/P1010238.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129208472922265842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pFdt2LRktYg/Ry6b8C90mQI/AAAAAAAADN0/KSZLRtYLmWw/s320/P1010241.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129208481512200450" />

Colorado Rockies going to the World Series

Last night, I (Nate because Laura is in Orlando bringing home the bacon) and Sundance (although she got a little bit sleepy as the game went really late) watched sports history. for the first time in club history (which isn't all that long), the Colorado Rockies have put together a team that seems unbeatable (winning the last 21 games) and are going to the World Series!!! Somehow, in some sort of bizarre hedging betting thing, I owe my Dad 10 cents but it's worth it. Deep down somewhere I'm still a MN Twins fan (and got to see them play in September) but it certainly is great to have success with the team that plays just a few miles away!!!

Let us know if anyone is planning to come out for the Series. Originally intending to go there with Laura's boss and her husband (before they had a meeting in Orlando on Tuesday morning), it ended up being just the two of us. We missed them but it was great to get away!! We spent one day at the Magic Kingdom, one day at the MGM studios and one day at the Typhoon Lagoon water park. Yes, we went on the Space Mountain rollercoaster (where the woman in front of us said that Nate screams like a girl - which was pretty emasculating but VERY funny for Laura so that's good). We spun ourselves sick on the teacup ride. We slept late and laid in bed watching the TV. The Aerosmith rollercoaster at MGM is intense but too short. The Tower of Terror was actually kind of a scary ride. The Buzz Lightyear ride was fun. The "tour through the movies" ride was disappointing. Above all, it was nice to get away from our rather busy jobs. After slowing down and kicking Nate to the curb at the airport, Laura headed up to her grandparents for the night and Monday and is now in Orlando doing something important with Costco that I don't understand. A few pictures of our trip are located here: http://picasaweb.google.com/n8blair/Disney

Evidence of Matrimonial Bliss

OK, I think that the first real blog entry should point everyone to the evidence of our matrimonial bliss (aka the wedding and honeymoon photos). I've also copied all of the table-top camera photos into an album (some of them are pretty washed out and some are a little odd but they are all there). Finally, I put a little online collection of pictures from our honeymoon in Kauai Hawaii!

Official Wedding and Reception Photos

Reception Table Camera Pictures

Nate's Pics for the slide show

Hawaii Honeymoon Pics

This is the first posting for Laura and Nate's Blog.
